An excavator operator hired by a Chinese quarry firm has been shot dead in a forest at Kwame Whettey in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region.
The deceased 25-year-old excavator operator, Gausu Yusif and his colleague Charles Essuman, who is currently on admission at the ST Gregory Catholic Hospital, were clearing the path ahead of a quarry exhibition in the forest when some armed persons opened fire on them.
Speaking to Channel One News, the Awutu Bereku District Police Commander, Superintendent Edmond Nyamekye, said that the armed men on a motorbike fled the scene after opening fire on the victims.
He added that investigations into the incident have begun.
We received reports that a person was shot in a forest near Awutu Breku, and another individual was injured and rushed to the hospital. Together with my crime officer, we rushed to the scene. When we got there, we combed the forest to see if maybe we could find the person who perpetrated the crime. But after a hefty search, nobody was found. Strenuous investigation is ongoing to apprehend the person who perpetrated the crime,” he said
Chief of Awutu Aberful, Nai Kojo Nam-Quaye, who handed over the concession to the Chinese investors, appealed to the IGP to ensure that the matter is thoroughly investigated and the perpetrators arrested and prosecuted.
